THEME: Beautitudes - Jesus didn't offer a quick fix for pain, but rather taught of God being present in the midst of it.
Five people with different needs are in the self help section of a bookstore, where there's supposed to be a book to fix everything. This very funny theatre piece ends with the minister being one of the extras in the bookstore and at the end with a little Twilight Zone music in the back ground. steps into the scene and gets each character to talk about what's really going on.
A great segue into a sermon.

Pentecost in the Board Room (Script)
$

Theme: A modern day look at how the renewal of the Holy Spirit continues to happen.
Three attorneys awaiting their fourth member for a meeting, do the shark thing about who's moving up and who's not and what's going on with Martin the king shark who, for some reason, has been acting very differently lately. Martin arrives and under scrutiny reveals exactly what has made him different recently: the Holy Spirit.
Funny to general audiences (hysterical for attorneys), very true to the corporate board room and to the change in a life renewed by the Holy Spirit.
Can be introduced with optional 1st century scene surrounding Peter's speech in Acts, "People of Jerusalem, these men are not drunk as you suppose; it's only nine in the morning! No this is to fulfill the prophecy spoken of by.....". Using these two in conjunction makes for a powerful Pentecost Sunday experience.

The Pharisee and the Tax Collector

The parable is given the contemporary context of a scene class in New York. A woman with great experience ( in her estimation) is out to impress the famous teacher to get a step up in her career. Meanwhile her scene partner whose film credit is "Attack of the Killer Beavers" is simply trying to memorize his lines. He finally gets to tell the instructor of his feelings of unworthiness to be in the class at all and his thankfulness for grace.
A funny, yet touching analogy about the heart attitude we should have for prayer.

South Beach Nocturne

Based on Psalm 73. A cutting edge piece very sensitively written. A French fashion model with AIDS drops in after hours at an Episcopal church, because he "wants to find the love of God." He finds a woman-priest fresh out of seminary, who is pregnant and lamenting "might have beens" in her life. She is unduly fascinated with his glamorous career. He exposes the falsehoods behind the glossy images of mass media and reveals to her that when he read Psalm 73 he lamented his life, because "his body was sleek and sound and he wore his pride like a necklace." Now he is dying "of a very fashionable disease" and wants to find the peace of God. She leads him through the sinner's prayer as he becomes a baby Christian and she realizes her pregnancy is a gift not a burden.
This is an excellent piece, if we do say so ourselves.

It's fast-paced, funny, and when done well, the feeding the pigs scene and reconciliation scene are very moving.
