Answered Prayer

Emily desires fellowship with the people of her church, but she struggles with an eating disorder. She's at a Bible study where people are asking for prayer for their cholesterol problems and upcoming face lifts, and where answered prayer is a sign of faith. But Emily's recovery from anorexia feels like its taking entirely too long. When she gets up to leave early, she is confronted by a loving member of the Bible Study who apologizes for the other's lack of understanding and encourages her to stay. Excellent writing, some hilarious lines.

A good "bridge" piece for those in the church who are skeptical about the recovery process and why it might take so long.

Sandy is in line at the grocery store buying assorted breakfast cereals for her three inner children, when Dr. Drivelmire, head of Women's Studies at the local college, approaches her with a serious question. He is obsessing over his recent Visa bill and needs to quell the pain with junk food and wonders if she could recommend a particularly disgusting breakfast cereal. After much pontificating and psychobabble, Dr Drivelmire goes off in search of empty calories, when Fred a rather normal guy who's car won't start runs up and asks Sandy for a lift to the local church. But Sandy proudly announces that she has to "draw a boundary," if she were "the old unhealthy her" of course she would give him a lift but now that she's in aggression therapy "no way." An uproarious send-up of those people who never leave the recovery plateau but are content to examine their navels for the rest of their lives.

A huge hit at the National Association for Christians in Recovery Conference.

Feeling Good at Church

Sam likes to serve at church. Everyone clearly can't live without him, and Sam gets lots of strokes for saving the day. Last year Sam forgot about his son's birthday party while being absorbed in his work at the spring fund raiser bazaar. Big mistake. It won't happen again and his wife has made sure of it. This year Sam has a pre-birthday party errand list that will give him 20 minutes to spare before the festivities begin. he is just about to go out the door when Marion calls from the church fundraiser, Gloria is waiting in line behind her, and Crystal has just heard that Sam's on the phone and is coming with her own request.

What ensues is a painfully funny and true account of when servanthood becomes co-dependency.

Louise is late for Ed's regional company dinner. Ed is under a lot of pressure, and Louise shows up dressed too casually for the dinner. Ed wants her to "play the game" with his fellow employees and managers, keeping the appearance of graceful success. At every private moment his personal stress and her seeming inability to do thing just right create an ongoing stream of criticism. Louise finally confronts the pattern of verbal abuse, her right to better treatment and her choice to leave.

A dramatic, powerful piece that addresses emotional abuse within Christian relationships and the first step to healthy choices.

Dave is visiting his folks after a year of being away. Dave's mom is, how shall we say, controlling. Despite Dave's intentions to handle this relationship in a healthier way, he ends up in the midst of the same old argument with her. Only this time, for some heavenly reason, in a sort of twilight zone way, when he shouts "Freeze" at her, she does! When he wishes to roll back the tape and handle the conversation differently, she hilariously goes into reverse to the point of the scene where the conflict began, and this time he handles the conflict in a healthy way. When he begs her to slow down so he can think, she actually slows down to about 16 rpm, as Dave breaks the 4th wall and asks the audience how he could better handle the situation. Dave learns how to apply healthier communication skills, and Dave's mom realizes that, for some strange reason, her old ways of getting her needs met aren't working anymore.

A hilarious piece that's full of surprises. Delightfully theatrical.

Sarah and Tom were high school sweethearts. Now they've bumped into each other 16 years later. He abruptly broke up with her when she was 16 and never spoke to her again. Now's her chance to find out why. But something about him seems strange. The nervous, reserved man in front of her is a far cry from the wacky, crazy guy she knew at 16. During a flashback to a disco dance contest at a church talent show, we get a glimpse of the old Tom. But as Sarah presses harder and harder into the mystery she gets a devastating surprise for an answer. Tom was sexually abused at age 16. What's worse he has spent the last 16 years of his life trying to kill anything that would make him attractive to other people. When she discovers the truth, she tries to get him to see that the Christian life isn't about just surviving, it's about flourishing.

A deeply moving piece about how refusing to work through a trauma can handicap a person's entire life.

Mary escaped her life in South Georgia and moved to L.A. years ago. David, her younger slower brother, stayed behind and made the best of things in his limited way. Now she's an alcoholic and has just come back to Georgia with a dream of buying back their beautiful childhood home and somehow redeeming their tragic childhood. But David simply states the truth to her, that neither a house nor a fantasy can save her, only Jesus can.

A sweet and stirring piece about memory and regret.

Laura, an attorney trying to climb the ladder of success, calls her Christian coworker, Phil, into her office. She gives him an illegal inside scoop on a cheap land deal he could score if he moves quickly. At first he's tempted, but then backs away. When she wants to know why, he tells her how he's profited from illegal information in the past and never gotten caught at it. But it's left him miserable inside and worse, his choices brought about destructive consequences in other people's lives around him.

An example of healthy choices in the midst of temptation.
