Written for Gary Smalley at the Pro Athlete's Outreach Conference, this piece looks at the position a wife is forced into when her husband refuses to honor her. Eilene is a business woman known for her tough tactics and getting her way. But she's miserable. In talking with her therapist, she reveals how her husband, a major league baseball player, ignored her and took her for granted for years until one night at a party in Palm Beach she vowed never to be laughed at again. She gets in the driver's seat of her life and never looks back until she's at the top as a powerful and lonely woman.

John and Maddy are sitting in the 4th row at the NBA playoffs. John is totally into it, and Maddy is totally over it! When John asks why she's in such a bad mood, she tells the story of her 8th grade phys. ed. trauma where she got wolloped in the head by a basketball. Things go from bad to worse when a basketball comes flying out of the NBA game and nearly knocks her head off again. John laughs hysterically and she goes ballistic. When asked by John why she can't just lighten up and laugh at herself, she announces that she refuses to laugh at something that hurt her very deeply, and marches out. A great look at how nurturing the pain of the past can ruin our joy in the present.
A very funny, active piece.

Theme: Divorce. Karen informs Laura that she will be soon joining her club as she is going to get a divorce. Instead of the response she expects Laura asks her to examine herself and her marriage real hard before she takes that step. The price is high, the wounds deep. Laura relates how she discovered that some of her former marriage's problems were her issues that have continued to come up in other relationships. She encourages her to do whatever it takes to make the marriage work, before going through a divorce. The ending is left open.
There are no pat answers in this, but thought provoking look at a tough issue from a Christian perspective.
